Went to "free" Bach concert Sat., March 14, 2015. At the entrance a man held a brochure up in front of me, saying nothing. I asked, "Are you offering this to me?" He nodded (or said) yes and I said thank you and took it. Went inside and sat in an empty pew, then noticed it was in a group of reserved pews. The same man, evidently an usher, was nearby and I asked him whether I could buy a ticket for one of the reserved seats. He said, "You don't have enough money." As a matter of fact I do not have much money.
It turned out most of the reserved seats weren't needed and various people sat in them, but by then I had taken another seat with a worse view and stayed there. I put $5 in an envelope during the first two selections and the same man collected the envelopes without remarks, perhaps because people were seated next to me. Then there was a cake-and-coffee intermission. I skipped this and left the sanctuary.
On my way to my car another man by the walkway was looking at me and I said hello but he said nothing and remained motionless except for following me with his eyes.
The church literature emphasizes civility. Between these two and the murky bait-and-switch publicity for the "free" music I didn't experience much. There's more to civility than throwing twenties in the collection plate. Too bad since I've been looking for a church with good music and this one is not far from home.

  • Dove is Peace is beautiful. The members are very friendly and welcoming, while not being intrusive to guests, visitors, or new members. There is a pipe organ there, if you like the organ or if you like organ music.
Pastor Stephen Springer is willing to talk with you about the Evangelical Lutheran faith and answer any questions you may have about Christianity, in general. There is no pressure to join or to get baptized (if you're not already a baptized Christian) or become an official member of the faith. I like how Pastor Springer is very professional with everyone. I like how he emphasizes that everyone is welcome- regardless of faith spiritual background, gender identity, sexual orientation, or racial and ethnic background, etc.
Dove of Peace is also involved in the in the community, including it being a member of Interfaith Community Services, a non-profit agency that serves our people in Tucson, AZ- who are either elderly, have disabilities, are homeless or near homeless.
I highly recommend this congregation if you want something that's religious, but more informal and laid back.
They can make you a name tag and personal folder, if you would like (even members wear name tags, however, name tags and a personal folder for newsletters, etc. are optional).
Overall, Dove is a great community. :)
